We all make assumptions about people based on superficial characteristics that may have little relationship to their qualities as an individual. This stereotyping is how our brains try to simplify and make manageable the complexity of world around us. The problem is, these broad generalisations are often wrong in general, and almost always wrong at the level of the individual.
In order to treat people fairly we need to unmask and overcome these stereotypes and biases. We need to safeguard our capacity to judge individuals as individuals, affording everyone equal respect and opportunities, irrespective of their background.
The benefits for organisations that live up to these principles are many. They tap a wider talent pool when recruiting, have greater cognitive diversity and a wider range of ideas and perspectives to draw on in decision making, and are richer, more welcoming places to work.
This live online training session helps participants understand the cognitive and cultural sources of stereotypes, to reflect on their own biases, and to appreciate the value of ensuring equality and diversity at work. Led by an expert trainer and with a small and interactive group, delegates will build the knowledge, tools and strategies to help them contribute to building and maintaining inclusivity both in their team and across their organisation.

This intensive session is designed to have maximum practical impact in a short time. It provides tools and tips around topics including:
- How our brains and experiences create biases in how we think about different groups
- What unconscious bias is and how it operates in both individuals and organisations
- Working within the laws that underpins equality and diversity
- Why equality and diversity – and overcoming biases – are valuable goals both for ethical and organisational reasons
- Exploring your personal ‘diversity’ and biases, and understanding how they impact on your behaviour, relationships and interactions
- Strategies for managing your own biases
- Action planning for promoting inclusion in your team
After the course every participant receives a PDF course handbook covering everything they’ve learnt on the course.
How is the training delivered?
This is a live and fully interactive training session. Just like classroom training, it is delivered by an experienced tutor to a small group, ensuring plenty of chances to ask questions and discuss experiences.
Using a free web based interface, delegates are able to see, hear and interact with the trainer and other participants in real time. The session is intensive, and last about 90 minutes, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to help support equality and diversity in their organisation.
